Lilypad Exterior Cleaning – Gutter Clearing FAQs

How often should you get your gutters cleared?2025-12-14T20:47:33+00:00

Getting your gutters cleared once a year is fairly normal, this is due to the leaves falling at the end of each year. However, if you do not have any high trees in the vicinity of your property then you could very likely push the clearing to 18-24 months. One thing to consider though is other than leaves, moss is one of the primary causes for blocked gutters. This moss comes from the roof of your property and with wind and rainfall clumps of moss will slowly fill your gutters.

Do blocked gutters cause dampness in the house?2025-12-14T20:47:52+00:00

Yes blocked gutters can certainly lead to dampness within your property. This is caused by the gutters being blocked, forcing the rainwater up and over the gutter line leading to water ingress. Often seen in upstairs bedrooms above the windows. If left too long this will lead to mold.

Do you need to be home when you come to clear my gutters?2025-12-14T20:48:11+00:00

If you know you will not be home for the scheduled visit to clear the gutters it is not a problem so long as we have full access to the perimeter of the property where the gutters are situated. We have our own petrol generators which we can use to run our vacuums, making us fully self sustainable.

How high can we reach with our gutter vacuums?2025-12-14T20:48:27+00:00

The beauty of us using gutter vacuum systems is we do not need to rely on the use of ladders which not only makes our job infinity safer but also quicker and more efficient. Using our gutter vacuum poles we can reach up to a height of a 4 story property.

Do we clear the downpipe too?2025-12-14T20:48:45+00:00

Yes we do, every single gutter job we will double check downpipes for blockages using our gutter vacuum nozzle. If we suspect there is a blockage or know there is a blockage then we will manually dismantle the downpipe to clear it. However, if the blockage is below ground level then this is outside of our scope of work and will refer to a drainage company.

Should you get gutter hedgehogs or gutter guards?2025-12-14T20:49:02+00:00

In our opinion the “gutter protection” products available on the market are a waste of time and money. The entire purpose of gutters is to redirect rainwater in a controlled manner. Yes with time gutters will become blocked but with regular maintenance your gutters will stay free flowing. Once you put one of these products in situ within the gutters, they themselves fill the space in the gutters and within the same space of time that your gutters would normally become blocked these products will too become blocked and in most cases they will begin to cause problems such as overflowing gutters sooner than if you didn’t have them in the gutters in the first place. Along with this when it comes time to have a company like us come out to clear your gutters you will receive higher quotes than if you did not have these products in situ as to take them out we need to use our ladders with a number of ladder placements, then we need to clean the products themselves then clear the gutters too as debris certainly gets past the products, then finally we have to go back up the ladder to reinstate the products in place. Overall a job that may take us only 45 minutes would now take considerably longer meaning we have to charge more. In conclusion in our opinion do not waste your money, instead keep up with annual gutter maintenance. In the long run this will be cheaper and more effective for your gutters.

What causes gutter to get blocked?2025-12-14T20:49:18+00:00

The main culprits to blocked gutters are leaves from surrounding trees, typically throughout Autumn and Winter, and then from moss that has fallen off your roof. Occasionally we will come across weeds growing in the gutters which have come from birds dropping seeds and then sometimes we do find the odd physical items such as tennis balls which fit perfectly into the opening of a downpipe!

How do you know the gutters are cleared if a gutter vacuum has been used?2025-12-14T20:49:39+00:00

This is a very common question we get asked, which is a very fair question to ask. Its simple really; firstly there is good physical feedback we get from the gutter poles, we can although the gutters may be 6 metres above us, we can feel if there is something in the gutter line knowing if its still blocked. We can also do a trick where we place the end of the gutter nozzle into the top of the downpipe and listen at the base of the downpipe, if we can hear the wind rushing up we know it is clear. Lastly, the fail-safe way we know whether the gutters are clear is with our high level inspection cameras that give us a live feed of the end of the gutter nozzle. We can also record with the same camera which can be useful to put minds at ease to concerned customers.

Can we clear gutters above a conservatory?2025-12-14T20:49:58+00:00

We certainly can, this is yet another reason why gutter vacuum systems are so great. Gutters above a conservatory are not an issue for our high reach gutter poles, we can easily reach up and over a conservatory to reach the gutters above. Also another plus is with our systems we can effectively clear the valley found where a conservatory meets the house wall. This is often where a lot of debris builds up and is difficult to access by hand.

Do we fix guttering when we clear them?2025-12-14T20:50:13+00:00

We certainly can, unless we are told prior to the visit we will always keep an eye out for any potential repairs or replacements that could be made on your guttering as we go around clearing them. We will then write you up a quote for the repairs and replacements and often we are able to carry out these extra works on the same visit.
